North of Mexico there was no writing in the first millennium AD, so this thread rests on archaeology: earthworks, burials, dwellings, tree rings and radiocarbon dates. At its start the Hopewell communities of the Ohio and Illinois valleys were raising great ceremonial earthworks and trading exotic materials across the continent, while on the Colorado Plateau the Basketmakers, ancestors of the Pueblo peoples, were settling down to farm maize. All dates are approximate, and sources often disagree by a century or more.
