Southeast Asia and Oceania (14th – mid-15th c.)

Southeast Asia from 1301 to the middle of the 15th century. As Mongol power waned, new states rose, and the region came to be divided, in George Coedès's phrase, between two poles: the Javanese kingdom of Majapahit, which under Gajah Mada and Hayam Wuruk claimed overlordship from Sumatra to New Guinea and was celebrated in Prapanca's Nagarakretagama, and the Siamese kingdom of Ayutthaya, founded in 1351. On the middle Mekong Fa Ngum united the Lao principalities as Lan Xang, and on the coast of Vietnam the Cham king Che Bong Nga waged Champa's last great offensive against Đại Việt.
