Trưng sisters’ rebellion
The sisters Trưng Trắc and Trưng Nhị, daughters of a Lạc lord, raised the Red River Delta against Han rule, took some sixty-five towns and ruled from Mê Linh for three years, until the Han general Ma Yuan crushed the rising in 42–43. In Vietnam they are revered as national heroines.

In March 40 Trưng Trắc and her younger sister rose against Su Ding, the governor of Jiaozhi, remembered for his cruelty; according to the Vietnamese annals, he had killed her husband, Thi Sách, the Lạc lord of Chu Diên. The rising spread from the Red River Delta to the Lạc and other non-Han peoples from Hepu to Rinan, and Trưng Trắc was proclaimed queen.
In 41 Emperor Guangwu ordered a campaign and put Ma Yuan in command (the Book of Later Han dates his march to 42). In the spring of 42 his army defeated the rebels at Lãng Bạc, and by April or May 43 the revolt had been crushed; the last pockets of resistance were destroyed by the end of the year. Chinese sources say that Ma Yuan had the sisters beheaded and sent their heads to Luoyang; Vietnamese tradition holds that they drowned themselves in the Hát (Đáy) River. Ma Yuan imposed direct Han administration and melted down the Lạc bronze drums, the emblems of the chiefs’ power, to cast a bronze horse for the emperor.
