Abd al-Rahman I
Umayyad prince, grandson of the caliph Hisham, who escaped the Abbasid massacre of his family, crossed to al-Andalus and in 756 founded the Emirate of Córdoba, which he ruled until 788. His dynasty held al-Andalus for nearly three centuries.
