Person985–1021
al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah
Abu Ali al-Mansur, sixth Fatimid caliph and Ismaili imam (996–1021), the first of his dynasty to be born in Egypt. He succeeded at eleven, took the government into his own hands in 1000, founded the House of Knowledge (Dar al-'Ilm) in Cairo in 1005 and issued harsh decrees against Christians and Jews, among them the destruction of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in 1009. The Druze regard him as a manifestation of God; in 1021 he disappeared without trace on the Muqattam hills outside Cairo.
