Fatimid Caliphate
Isma'ili Shi'a caliphate (909–1171) whose rulers traced their descent from Fatima, the Prophet’s daughter. Founded in Ifriqiya after the overthrow of the Aghlabids, it conquered Egypt in 969 and made the new city of Cairo its capital; at its height it ruled North Africa, Sicily, the Levant and the Hejaz, until Saladin abolished it in 1171.
