al-Idrisi
Abu Abdallah Muhammad al-Sharif al-Idrisi, Arab geographer and cartographer from Ceuta, of the house of the Idrisids. Educated in Córdoba, he travelled from Asia Minor to England before Roger II of Sicily invited him to Palermo around 1138; there he made for the king a world map engraved in silver and compiled the Nuzhat al-mushtaq, the 'Book of Roger' (1154), with its seventy maps, and later served William I. He also wrote a treatise on medicinal plants.
