Roger II of Sicily
Son of Roger I, count of Sicily from 1105, duke of Apulia and Calabria from 1127 and the first king of Sicily from 1130. He united the Norman lands of southern Italy, ruled a court of Latin, Greek and Arab culture at Palermo — al-Idrisi made his world map for him — and in 1146–1148 his fleets seized coastal towns of Ifriqiya; whether he officially styled himself king of Africa is disputed.
