Amda Seyon I
Emperor of Ethiopia from 1314 to 1344 of the Solomonic dynasty, throne name Gebre Mesqel (‘Servant of the Cross’). He brought the autonomous north under control, conquered Damot and Hadiya and in 1332 defeated a coalition of Muslim states led by Sabr ad-Din of Ifat, more than doubling the territory of the Christian kingdom; his wars are told in the chronicle known as the Glorious Victories. After his death he was numbered among the saints.
