Anawrahta
King of Pagan (1044–1077), regarded as the founder of the first Burmese empire. According to the chronicles he won the throne by killing his kinsman King Sokkate in single combat; he extended irrigation around Kyaukse, brought the Irrawaddy valley under Pagan’s rule and made Theravada Buddhism the faith of his court. With his reign verifiable Burmese history begins, though much of his story is known only from later chronicles.
