Pagan Kingdom
First kingdom to unite the Irrawaddy valley, the core of present-day Myanmar. It grew out of a small 9th-century settlement of the Mranma at Pagan (Bagan); King Anawrahta (r. 1044–1077) turned it into an empire in the 1050s–1060s, and Theravada Buddhism spread under its rule. Mongol invasions toppled it in 1287.
