Antipope Clement VII
Robert of Geneva, son of Count Amadeus III of Geneva and a cardinal from 1371, who as papal legate is said to have authorized the massacre at Cesena in 1377. Elected at Fondi on 20 September 1378 by the cardinals who rejected Urban VI, he settled at Avignon under the protection of the French king and was the first Avignon pope of the Western Schism; the Catholic Church counts him as an antipope.
