Person1318–1389
Pope Urban VI
Bartolomeo Prignano, archbishop of Bari, pope from 1378 to 1389. Elected in Rome in April 1378 while the Roman crowd demanded a Roman or Italian pope, he soon alienated the cardinals, most of whom declared his election invalid and chose a rival pope, Clement VII; the Catholic Church regards Urban and his Roman successors as the legitimate line.
