Atisha (Dipamkara Shrijnana)

Buddhist teacher from Bengal (982–1054), one of the leading scholars of the monastery of Vikramashila, who had studied for about twelve years in Suvarnadvipa, the realm of Srivijaya. Invited by the rulers of Guge in western Tibet, he left India in 1040 and spent his last years in Tibet, where his Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment and his disciple Dromtön, founder of the Kadam school, made him a central figure of the later spread of Buddhism.
