Pala Empire
Dynasty and empire of Bengal and Bihar founded by Gopala around 750. Under Dharmapala and Devapala it fought the Pratiharas and the Rashtrakutas for Kannauj; its kings were the great patrons of Buddhist monasteries — Nalanda, Vikramashila and Somapura — until the Sena dynasty replaced them in the 12th century.
