Augustine of Hippo
Theologian and philosopher from Roman Africa, born at Thagaste. For some years a follower of Mani, he was baptised by Ambrose in Milan in 387 and became bishop of Hippo Regius in 395 or 396; author of the Confessions and The City of God.
