Ibn Sina (Avicenna)
Abu Ali al-Husayn ibn Sina, known in Latin as Avicenna, Persian philosopher and physician from the neighbourhood of Bukhara. Physician to the Samanid amir at seventeen, he later served the rulers of Khwarazm and western Iran, was vizier of the Buyid Shams al-Dawla at Hamadan and spent his last years at Isfahan with the Kakuyid Ala al-Dawla. His Book of Healing and Canon of Medicine shaped philosophy and medicine in the Islamic world and in Europe; he died in 1037 and was buried at Hamadan.
