Cahokia
City of the Mississippian culture in the American Bottom, across the Mississippi from present-day St. Louis (about 1050–1350). At its height around 1100 it covered some 16 km² with about 120 earthworks, among them Monks Mound, the largest pre-Columbian earthwork in the Americas, and had perhaps 15,000–20,000 inhabitants; its original name is unknown, and it is named after the Cahokia, an Illinois people who lived there in the 17th century.
