Person1264–1314
Pope Clement V
Bertrand de Got, a Gascon and archbishop of Bordeaux, pope from 1305 to 1314. Elected under pressure from King Philip IV of France, he never went to Rome and in 1309 settled the papal curia at Avignon, beginning the Avignon papacy. Yielding to Philip, he allowed the proceedings against the Knights Templar and, after the Council of Vienne (1311–1312), which he had summoned, abolished the order.
