Pope Gregory XI

Pierre Roger de Beaufort, a nephew of Pope Clement VI, pope from 1370 to 1378 and the last of the Avignon popes. Fearing the loss of the Papal States in the war with Florence and urged by Catherine of Siena, he left Avignon in September 1376 and entered Rome in January 1377; his death there in March 1378 was followed by the Western Schism.
