Đinh Bộ Lĩnh
Vietnamese ruler from Hoa Lư, son of Đinh Công Trứ, a prefect appointed by Dương Đình Nghệ. After the collapse of the Ngô kingdom he defeated the rival warlords and in 968 proclaimed himself emperor of Đại Cồ Việt, with his capital at Hoa Lư; he is known as Đinh Tiên Hoàng, ‘the Former Emperor Đinh’. In 975, according to the Song shi (the Vietnamese annals date this to 973), the Song court enfeoffed him as Prince of Jiaozhi. In 979 he and his eldest son Đinh Liễn were murdered by a palace official.
