Dmitry Donskoy

Prince of Moscow from 1359 and grand prince of Vladimir from 1362, a grandson of Ivan Kalita, who came to the throne at the age of nine under the guidance of Metropolitan Alexius. He built the first stone Kremlin and defeated the Horde's armies on the Vozha (1378) and at Kulikovo (1380) — hence the name Donskoy, ‘of the Don’ — but had to submit again after Tokhtamysh burned Moscow in 1382; by his will he passed the grand principality to his son Vasily as a Muscovite patrimony.
