Dōgen
Japanese Zen master, born in Kyoto, founder of the Sōtō school of Zen in Japan. After training on Mount Hiei and at Kennin-ji he studied in Song China (1223–1227 or 1228) under Rujing; he founded Kōshō-ji near Kyoto and Eihei-ji in Echizen and wrote the Shōbōgenzō.
