Shinran
Japanese Buddhist monk, born in Hino near Kyoto. After twenty years of Tendai training on Mount Hiei he became a disciple of Hōnen in 1201; exiled in 1207, he later spent some twenty years in the Kantō, taught complete reliance on Amida’s Original Vow and is regarded as the founder of the True Pure Land school (Jōdo Shinshū).
