Person1312–1377
Edward III of England
King of England from 1327 to 1377, the son of Edward II and Isabella of France. Through his mother, a daughter of Philip IV, he claimed the French crown, which led to the Hundred Years’ War (from 1337), and in 1340 formally took the title of King of France. His reign saw the English victories of Sluys and Crécy, the capture of Calais and his son the Black Prince’s triumph at Poitiers, but also the Black Death and, in his last years, the loss of most of the lands won in France.
