Person1293–1350
Philip VI of France
King of France from 1328 to 1350, the first of the House of Valois. When the senior line of the Capetians died out in 1328, the French magnates chose him, a first cousin of the last king, in preference to Edward III of England; his confiscation of Aquitaine in 1337 opened the Hundred Years’ War. His fleet was almost destroyed at Sluys (1340), his army routed at Crécy (1346), and he lost Calais in 1347.
