Emperor Huizong of Song
Eighth emperor of the Song dynasty (r. 1100–1126), an accomplished painter, calligrapher and poet and a great patron and collector of art. His reign was dominated by the minister Cai Jing; he favoured Taoism and allied with the Jurchen Jin against the Liao, but when the Jin turned on the Song he abdicated in January 1126. Captured at the fall of Kaifeng in 1127, he died a prisoner at Wuguocheng in the far north-east in 1135.
