Frederick Barbarossa
Frederick I of Hohenstaufen, king of Germany from 1152 and Holy Roman Emperor from 1155. His long wars to rule northern Italy brought defeat by the Lombard League at Legnano (1176) and ended with the Peace of Constance (1183); he set out on the Third Crusade and drowned in the river Saleph in Anatolia on 10 June 1190. The nickname Barbarossa, “Red Beard”, is Italian and late.
