Lombard League
Alliance of the cities of northern Italy, backed by Pope Alexander III, formed in 1167 against Frederick Barbarossa's attempt to rule them through imperial officials. Its army defeated the emperor at Legnano (1176), and the Peace of Constance (1183) left the cities their self-government; revived against Frederick II, the league was dissolved on his death in 1250.
