Fujiwara no Michinaga
Japanese statesman under whom the power of the Fujiwara regents reached its height. Minister of the Left from 996, he married four daughters to emperors and crown princes and was the maternal grandfather of three emperors; he was formally regent only in 1016–1017, but dominated the court for more than two decades as ‘regent in all but name’. He was the patron of Murasaki Shikibu and left a diary of court life.
