Murasaki Shikibu
Japanese writer and poet of the Heian period, author of The Tale of Genji, a diary covering about 1008–1010 and a collection of poems. Her personal name is unknown; ‘Shikibu’ refers to her father's post in the Ministry of Ceremonial. From a scholarly branch of the northern Fujiwara, she learned Chinese as a child and from about 1005–1006 served as lady-in-waiting to Empress Shōshi; the years of her birth (the 970s) and death (1014 or later) are uncertain.
