Kang Gam-chan (Kang Kamch'an)
Korean scholar-official and general of the Goryeo dynasty. A top graduate of the state examination, he urged King Hyeonjong not to surrender during the Khitan invasion of 1010 and, in his seventies, commanded the Goryeo army that destroyed the third Liao invasion at Heunghwajin and Gwiju in 1018–1019; he later proposed walling the capital, Gaegyeong, and is honoured as one of Korea's greatest commanders.
