Person815–887
Georgios I of Makuria
King of Makuria (sole ruler by 856 – c. 887), son of King Zacharias III. In 835, aged about twenty, he was made co-ruler — possibly with the title of caesar — and sent on a long journey to the Abbasid caliph to settle the dispute over the baqt. As sole king he fought the Arab adventurer al-Umari, who had invaded the gold-mining district near Abu Hamad; a church portrait described in the 13th century showed him as an old man of eighty.
