Al-Mu'tasim
Eighth Abbasid caliph (833–842), a younger son of Harun al-Rashid. He built his power on a guard of Turkic slave soldiers, for whom in 836 he founded a new capital at Samarra; he crushed the revolt of Babak and in 838 sacked the Byzantine city of Amorion.
