Ghana Empire
Kingdom of the Soninke in the Sahel of present-day south-eastern Mauritania and western Mali, called Wagadu by its people; ‘Ghana’ was the title of its king. Its origins are unknown. First mentioned by al-Fazari at the end of the 8th century as ‘the land of gold’, it grew rich on the trans-Saharan gold trade and in the 13th century became a vassal of the Mali Empire.
