Giovanni da Pian del Carpine
Italian Franciscan from Umbria, one of the companions of Francis of Assisi and provincial minister of his order in Germany. Sent by Pope Innocent IV, in 1245–1247 he travelled to the Mongol court near Karakorum and witnessed the enthronement of Güyük; his Ystoria Mongalorum is regarded as the first authentic European account of the Mongols. He then became archbishop of Antivari (Bar) and died in 1252.
