Gopala I
Founder of the Pala dynasty of Bengal (reigned from about 750), the son of Vapyata. According to the Khalimpur copper plate of his son Dharmapala, the people made him king to end the ‘law of the fishes’, the anarchy in which the strong devoured the weak; he left his son a large kingdom that took in most of Bengal.
