Hoysalas
Dynasty from the hill country north-west of Gangavadi, in present-day Karnataka, that rose as feudatories of the Western Chalukyas and ruled most of southern Karnataka from the 11th to the 14th century, with its capitals at Belur and Dvarasamudra (Halebidu). Vishnuvardhana made it a regional power in the early 12th century, and Ballala II declared independence at its end. The Hoysala temples of Belur, Halebidu and Somanathapura are famed for their dense carving in soapstone. Invaded by the armies of the Delhi Sultanate in the early 14th century, the kingdom ended when Ballala III was killed in battle near Madurai in 1343.
