Vishnuvardhana (Hoysala)
Hoysala king (reigned from about 1106–1108 to 1145–1156), born Bittiga or Bittideva, regarded as the real maker of the Hoysala kingdom. A feudatory of the Western Chalukyas, he took Talakad and the province of Gangavadi from the Cholas about 1116–1117 and later pushed north towards the Krishna. He adopted the Vaishnava teaching of Ramanuja — according to Sri Vaishnava tradition, Ramanuja himself converted him from Jainism — while his queen Shantala remained a Jain; in 1117 he dedicated the Chennakeshava temple at Belur.
