Huang Chao
Salt smuggler from Yuanqu in Shandong who had repeatedly failed the imperial examinations and became the leader of the great rebellion of 875–884 against the Tang. He took Guangzhou (879), Luoyang (880) and Chang’an (881), where he proclaimed himself emperor of Qi; driven out in 883, he died in the Langhu valley near Mount Tai in 884.
