Hugues de Payens
Knight from Champagne, probably from Payns near Troyes, co-founder and first master of the Knights Templar. Around 1119 he and a few companions took religious vows and undertook to protect pilgrims on the roads of the Holy Land; King Baldwin II lodged them in the former al-Aqsa Mosque, then part of the royal palace. In the late 1120s he travelled to the West to win recruits and donations, and the Council of Troyes approved the order's rule.
