Husayn ibn Ali
Younger son of Ali and Fatima and grandson of Muhammad. Refusing allegiance to the Umayyad caliph Yazid I, he set out for Kufa at the invitation of its pro-Alid partisans and was killed with his companions at Karbala in 680; Shia Muslims venerate him as the third imam.
