Yazid I
Second Umayyad caliph (680–683), son of Mu'awiya I, whose appointment as his father’s heir was the first hereditary succession to the caliphate. His short reign, which saw the start of the Second Fitna, was marked by the killing of Husayn at Karbala, the sack of rebel Medina after the battle of al-Harra and the siege of Mecca.
