Ivan I Kalita
Prince of Moscow from 1325 and grand prince of Vladimir from 1328 (alone from 1331–1332) until his death in 1340, a son of Daniel, the first prince of Moscow. Having helped the Horde crush the Tver rising of 1327, he enjoyed the favour of Khan Özbeg, collected tribute for the Horde, acquired lands, built stone churches in the Kremlin and made Moscow the residence of the metropolitans. His nickname Kalita means ‘money bag’.
