Metropolitan Peter

Metropolitan of Kiev and all Rus’ from 1308, a native of Volhynia, who in his conflict with the princes of Tver drew close to the princes of Moscow and made Moscow his residence (by tradition from 1325). He persuaded Ivan Kalita to found the stone Dormition Cathedral in the Kremlin in 1326, died that December and was buried in it; canonized in 1339, he came to be revered as the patron saint of Moscow.
