Person
Jayavarman II
Khmer king regarded by later inscriptions as the founder of the kingdom of Angkor, posthumously named Parameshvara. According to the Sdok Kak Thom inscription of 1052/1053, he came ‘from Java’, reigned in turn at Indrapura, Hariharalaya, Amarendrapura and Mahendraparvata (Phnom Kulen), where a Brahmin consecrated him universal monarch so that Kambujadesha would no longer depend on Java, and died at Hariharalaya. The traditional dates of his reign, 802–850, are now often revised: inscriptions show him as king already in 790, and some accounts end his reign about 835 rather than 850.
