Chenla
Chinese name for the Khmer kingdom — or group of kingdoms — of the middle Mekong that in the late 6th and early 7th centuries absorbed Funan and preceded the empire of Angkor. Its kings Bhavavarman I, Mahendravarman and Ishanavarman I left Sanskrit and Khmer inscriptions; the main temples of Ishanapura (Sambor Prei Kuk) are attributed to Ishanavarman I. Soon after 706 it split into Land and Water Chenla.
