Jerome
Latin scholar, ascetic and translator from Stridon. Secretary to Pope Damasus I in Rome, he revised the Latin Gospels and, after settling in Bethlehem in 386, translated the Old Testament from Hebrew (c. 390–405) — the core of the Vulgate; he is one of the four great Latin Fathers of the Church.
