Kanem
Kingdom north-east of Lake Chad, probably founded by Zaghawa pastoralists; its origins are usually dated to about 700 (estimates range from 600 to 900). First mentioned by al-Ya'qubi in the late 9th century, it was ruled by the Duguwa and, from the 11th century, by the Muslim Sayfawa dynasty, which in the late 14th century moved west of the lake to Bornu; historians call the later state Kanem–Bornu.
