Kilwa Sultanate
Swahili sultanate centred on the island of Kilwa Kisiwani off the coast of present-day Tanzania, founded according to legend by a Persian prince from Shiraz in the 10th century. Controlling the export of gold and ivory from the interior through Sofala, it had become by the 14th century the most powerful city-state of the Swahili coast; the Portuguese sacked Kilwa in 1505.
